Disclosure return to their house roots on ‘Ecstasy

‘Ecstasy’ pulls Disclosure back toward the soulful, classic house sound that first built their name, a turn away from the more radio-leaning singles that came before it. Bright synth stabs and a trace of funk and disco sit over a steady, four-beat club rhythm pitched for after-hours sets, landing as an anthem in its own right. The track is out now via Universal-Island Records, Disclosure’s first release for the label, and it’s the first single off a forthcoming third album.

Guy and Howard Lawrence, the brothers who make up Disclosure, broke the news early on 24 February, posting to Instagram about an incoming live mix that would carry the name ‘Kitchen Mix.’ ‘Ecstasy’ arrived in the same post, slipped in alongside the mix news with comparatively little build-up of its own.

“This song came into existence in early 2019 during a writing session at Guy’s house in London,” Disclosure have said of the track. “We were curiously chopping up samples from various 70s disco and soul records when suddenly, Fantasy by Aquarium Dream gave us the exact thing we were searching for.”

The pair first broke into the mainstream with ‘Latch,’ a 2012 single featuring Sam Smith that went on to appear on their 2013 debut album, Settle.
