Familiar is out now on Running Back

Jennifer Loveless, who has released music since 2020, has a release on Running Back titled Familiar. The seven-track set opens on ‘Good morning’ and runs through, song by song, to its own title piece, which closes the sequence under the same name, ‘Familiar.’

That repetition runs alongside a larger theme: the album is described as ‘a record about time’, and the final piece settles that meditation into the record’s own name, closing a loop that the opening track, ‘Good morning,’ sets in motion from its first notes, a frame that holds the whole set together end to end. Rhythm and texture do much of that work throughout the record, stretching certain passages past where a listener expects them to resolve and pulling others tight by comparison. The sense of duration keeps shifting from one track to the next, an effect that holds from the record’s first bars to its last and carries the same push and pull through the whole set.
