Msaki takes the vocal on Black Coffee’s ‘Wish You Were Here

Black Coffee — Wish You Were Here artwork

Msaki takes the vocal on ‘Wish You Were Here’, the new Black Coffee single released today through Ultra Records. The Durban-born producer has incorporated Afrobeat and jazz into the record, and the resulting production is a gorgeous one. It follows ‘Drive’, which he made with David Guetta.

The instrumental is restrained and constructed around passages of soft piano, with the jazz influence discernible beneath them. Its overall effect is soothing, and the mood the record maintains is wistful and melancholic. Her vocal is positioned above it, rich enough that it holds against a setting kept this quiet.

His last record through Ultra was the remix package for ‘Drive’. Black Coffee has performed a summer residency on Ibiza in each of the last two years (2017, and again in 2018), a run that has established him as one of the most popular acts operating in dance music at present.

The single concludes his year, and if it is the soul in his house records and the depth of the melodies you know him for, the pace here is considerably slower.
